Visual Expression of Spirituality
May 2, 2011
During a Monday Evening spirituality group the men were asked to explore what spirituality means to them by artistically expressing themselves with chalk on blacktop. The only direction they were given was that all the drawings must connect. Some were apprehensive at first, but all anxieties quickly dissipated as the men relaxed and began to draw. The men are all different people with different faiths, but a common bond was found in the end. In a powerful discussion afterwards, the men realized they are all here together for a common goal. The bonds felt between brothers are far more rewarding than the use of any substance.
Employee Appreciation Dinner
April 25, 2011
RVC associates recently had the privilege to attend an appreciation banquet given by one of our contract employers. The employer expressed gratitude for all the hard work RVC has done for them, and generously supplied an amazing meal and relaxing evening. The gratitude is reciprocated by RVC associates who appreciate the opportunity to work and get their lives back on track.
Congratulations to RVC Graduates
April 17, 2011
This April, RVC had two female and four male associates complete the program. Family members, staff, and current RVC residents all gathered together to watch as the six RVC grads accepted their certificates of completion. Graduating the Recovery Ventures Program is a long and difficult journey that is a huge accomplishment. Each one of the 2011 graduating associates deserve to hold their heads up high. We wish them love and the best of luck as they continue with their new lives.
Spring Rafting Trip
April 2011
This Spring the men and women of RVC had the privilege to go white water rafting at Ace Adventure Resort in West Virginia. In exchange for white water rafting, RVC associates spent several days working for Ace Adventure. Associates stayed in beautiful cabins provided by the resort and spent their days helping Ace prepare resort grounds for the upcoming Summer season. The work included setting up campsite tents, picking up trash and debris, setting up trash cans and picnic tables, and cleaning dining areas. The evenings were spent getting much deserved rest with activities like hanging out in the hot tubs in the cabins and roasting marshmellows over camp fires. The work is difficult, but bonds made between associates are likely to never be forgotten.
New Therapeutic Program: Hypertufa Pottery
Spring 2011
Recovery Ventures Corporation is in the beginning stages of a new therapeutic program. Eugene Jones, a board member and certified horticultural therapist is leading a team of women in creating hypertufa planters and other horticulture activities. Eugene has devoted his time and knowledge to assisting RVC to establish a program to assist the corporation with creating financial sustainability and at the same time developing an additional therapeutic component.

The process of making hypertufa planters is a combination of earth smart materials that are light weight and allow the plants to breath. Ingredients are mixed and individual planters are molded by the team members. Each planter gets a personalized touch as creativity is left in the hands of the women with dyes and other natural additions. The women not only plant the seedlings but are also left to choose the different flower combinations for the final project.
The benefits of this project are ten-fold for the entire program. Therapeutic beneftis are evident as the women feel they are actually growing along with their creations. Skills such as teamwork, creativity, work ethic, socialization, task responsibility and nurturing are being developed and fine tuned in this process. This is an opportunity for the women to experience this process to come full circle in their lives.
